Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson aggravated his calf injury during practice this week. Unsurprisingly, he wants to play.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Wilson “has told the team that he can play.” However, “team doctors are being more cautious.” A final decision will be made on Sunday.
This aligns with our Friday night report that Wilson has a “chance” to play, and that the final call could be made during pregame warmups.
The Steelers are comfortable with either Wilson or Justin Fields. The key issue is whether they prefer Fields at 100 percent or Wilson at less than that.
Regardless, Wilson’s input should be disregarded. He is approaching the point where he is acutely aware of his football mortality, which can lead a player to make poor decisions in an attempt to extend their career.
Given the tight competition, Fields might be the smarter choice. If Fields performs well, it will only add to the intrigue, which is why Wilson is so eager to play.
